can you tell me what this is?!

This was my student Hannah (see hand) holding onto a creature which closely resembled a grasshopper...but was not! Does anyone know what this is called? I do not recall seeing them back in the States or Canada. Help!

UPDATE: Jon says this might be a katydid... any other ideas?
