sounds of Japan

In the summer cicadas can be heard ringing endlessly...strange considering even the most urban areas are full of the suckers. They are called 'semi' in Japanese. If one cannot hear cicadas in the summer, it just does not feel like summer.

This poor cicada was struggling bellyside up on the sidewalk. I propped it up and put it in the grass. I hope it is doing better. I think it has something to do with the incongruent wings - notice how the growth of the left wing is somewhat stunted. Poor thing, I wonder if it is a defect of sorts!
