Each New Year's meal consisted of various dishes and tons of individual tableware. The soup bowl, the pickles plate, the soy sauce saucer, rice bowl, main dish bowl, dessert dishes, tea cups, wine glasses...doing the dishes were a laborious chore after each meal! This is typical of Japanese cuisine as most people prefer to keep each flavor distinct from one another. Typically Japanese people eat in a triangular pattern...from the miso soup to the main dish and finally the rice. They do this to keep the tastes pure and 'fresh,' eating a bit of rice after each dish to cleanse the palate. You should see how mortified they are when they see me pile everything in one bowl a la Chinese-style and proceed to chomp it down. Their looks tell me, "What a barbarian!" After our trip to Hiro's mom's, I was inspired to buy some ceramics of my own. (see the picture) Oooo, happy bibi happy bibi!
