An acknowledgement to all the broken-hearted out there

BOSTON (Reuters) -- Are diamonds really forever?

An anonymous gift-giver left a $15,000 diamond engagement ring to the owner of an unlocked car in western Massachusetts with a typed note hinting at a broken heart. (see picture, left) "Merry Christmas. Thank you for leaving your car door unlocked. Instead of stealing your car I gave you a present. Hopefully this will land in the hands of someone you love, for my love is gone now. So there it is: diamonds may be a girl's best friend but apparently the same cannot be said for men. What to pick, getting over sticker shock, how to present it and surprise her, potential rejection...the list goes on... As for the ring itself...I prefer a very orthodox ring like the one pictured to the left. Perhaps the Japanese essence of simplicity is starting to affect me... Poor guy - now his wallet + his heart are hurting.
What do you suppose happened? Theory #1: he'd proposed to his girlfriend and she rejected him right off the bat Theory #2: the night before their wedding, she was attacked by a case of cold feet and returned the ring + (obviously) canceled the wedding plans.
