The waterfall was almost completely frozen on Monday morning as the temperature declined to minus 5.5 degrees below in the town in the predawn hours. It began to snow in Daigo at around 7 a.m., covering the waterfall. It is rare that the Fukuroda waterfall completely freezes in December, according to Daigo Municipal Government officials.

Last year we went to Fukuroda Falls for Christmas and the water was not frozen. Only a few traces of icicles and frozen bits. A cold snap has really hit us this year. This morning while shivering and attempting to wash dishes, my half-frostbite numb fingers clumsily dropped and broke a bowl. This is why I don't own fancy Riedel wine glasses. Oh, and the affordability factor, er...unaffordability factor.
